//
→The wise find joy in water, while the benevolent find joy in mountains. Ancient Chinese, regardless of their location or circumstances, would always set their sights on mountains and lakes throughout their lives.
Raised with a traditional Chinese art education and born in Guilin, the homeowner, despite living abroad, naturally places great emphasis on the sentiment towards mountains and waters. The inspiration of the "cave" comes from the unique feelings that the karst landscape of Guilin evokes. In the mountains are caves, and if light illuminates within, with an empty entrance, the rocks are companions. Our design philosophy revolves around mountains, water, rivers, and light, striving for an abstract expression, much like traditional Chinese landscape paintings which capture not just what the eye sees but also what the heart feels. The project is located by the Li River in Guilin, Guangxi. The house, situated on a higher floor, overlooks the Li River and covers an area of 180 square meters. The homeowner works in the arts, which significantly influenced the creative scope of the project. We employed countless R-angles and contrasting textures rich in character to express the mood of the space, striving to infuse the essence of landscapes into the interior with our unique interpretation.
THE ONG STUDIO
→Space Planning: Originally, the space had a layout of four bedrooms and three living areas. The boundary between the entrance hall, the living room, and the foyer was indistinct, lacking a dust-free zone. We focused on enhancing this area and extended the cave elements throughout the public zone. The kitchen size was also expanded. The remaining four bedrooms, while retaining their residential functions, increased the size of the master bathroom. The additional separated wet and dry areas in the guest bathroom cater to the bathing needs of the two children.

For the "cave," we envisioned its light to be soft and ever-changing, mirroring human emotions which can differ with varying light and time.
→To save space in the dining and kitchen area, we designed a sliding door measuring 1.5x2.6 meters. We invested heavily in the preliminary work to prevent deformation, ensure the door slides comfortably, and facilitate future maintenance. The finished product is not merely a door but resembles an evocative landscape painting.

→Regarding the scale of the "cave," embedding such a voluminous installation undoubtedly challenges the interior space and ceiling height. Through continuous experimentation, testing, and hands-on involvement, we gradually verified its feasibility, continuously encountering pleasant surprises along the way. The role of a designer is much like a social practitioner or construction worker. Their professional attributes can't be measured in terms of gains and losses. Each practice broadens our horizons, adding a new dimension of experience and thought. Contemplating what can and cannot be done, the process of reconstruction is synonymous with growth, and the accompanying rewards are immeasurable.
